How it works
- 1
First, let's get settled. Gently hold your child or lay your child down so they can see your face clearly, about the distance from your hand to your elbow. Make sure you're both comfortable.
- 2
Now, softly say your child's name and smile warmly. Move your face just a tiny bit side to side, very slowly, to see if your child follows with their eyes.
- 3
Let's add a little variation. Slowly move your head up a few inches, then down a few inches, while keeping eye contact if possible. You can also try sticking out your tongue very slowly and see if your child watches.
- 4
Now, let's practice a gentle back-and-forth. Look at your child, then slowly look away to the side for just a second, then look back and smile. See if your child re-engages when you return your gaze.
