How it works

  1. 1

First, let's get your child settled. If you have a high chair or secure spot, place your child there. Show your child the cup and say something like, 'Look! We have a special cup today.' Fill it with just a tiny sip of water or milk—about a teaspoon. Hold the cup gently and bring it toward your child's lips.

  2. 2

Now, gently tilt the cup so it just touches your child's lips. Don't pour yet—just let your child feel the rim. You might say, 'Here's your cup!' Watch your child's mouth.

  3. 3

Now, tilt the cup just enough for a drop or two to enter your child's mouth. Go very slowly and say, 'Here's a little drink!' Watch how your child handles the liquid.

  4. 4

Let's try one more sip if your child is enjoying it. Hold the cup and say, 'Another drink?' Offer it again, watching for your child's cues. If they seems done, that's perfectly fine—we'll wrap up.
