How it works

  1. 1

First, let's get your child's attention. Smile warmly, make eye contact, and say a long, exaggerated vowel sound like 'Ooooooo' in a soft, melodic voice. Watch your child's face closely.

  2. 2

Now, pause and listen. Wait 5–10 seconds after your sound to see if your child makes any vocalization in response—like a coo, gurgle, or vowel-like noise.

  3. 3

Let's try a different vowel. Say 'Aaaaaah' with a rising, playful inflection, like you're asking a question. Watch your child's mouth and eyes.

  4. 4

Now, let's have a back-and-forth. After your child makes any sound, wait 3 seconds, then imitate it exactly. Do this 2–3 times to create a mini 'conversation'.
