Interactive reading — follow the toddler

Parent and toddler share a picture book, with the toddler setting the pace. Agent coaches the parent to follow the child's pointing, naming, and page-turning rather than 'reading it properly.' Observations track toddler initiation and parent responsiveness to bids for co-attention.

What you'll need

Sit somewhere comfortable with your child on your lap or beside you. Pick a book they likes — picture books with big clear images work best.

How it works

  1. 1~20s

Hand them the book. Let them open it — to any page, even upside down. Watch what they does.

    Watch for: child_initiates_book_engagement

  2. 2~45s

When they points at something, name it. One word, clear. 'Dog!' If they says something back — even an approximation — light up and say it again.

    Watch for: parent_labels_child_selected_focus

  3. 3

If they keeps going back to the same page, that's not them being stuck — that's them wanting the ritual of that page. Stay on it as many times as they wants.
