Evening ritual — the same, every night

A predictable sequence of calming actions to close the day — bath or wash, book, song, kiss, lights down. Agent coaches the parent on holding the sequence even when tired. Observations track the child's anticipation of each phase and the parent's consistency.

What you'll need

Start about 45 minutes before target sleep time. Dim lights, lower voices in the home. Have bath, book, and pyjamas ready.

How it works

  1. 1~15s

Start with a clear cue — a phrase you always say. 'Time for our getting-ready routine.' Or a song. The cue signals the ritual has begun.

  2. 2~60s

Bath or wash together. Slow hands, soft voice. Name what you're doing. 'Washing your arms. Now your back.' Keep the water warm and the mood even warmer.

  3. 3

Move to the same reading spot every night — their bed, the rocker, a special cushion. One or two short books, read slowly.

  4. 4~30s

Final stretch: the same lullaby — every night. Then one kiss — the same place, forehead or cheek. Then lights down, your voice lowered to a whisper. 'Goodnight, my love.'
