Face gazing

Parent holds baby 8-12 inches from their face and allows sustained mutual gaze. Agent's prompts are sparse — mostly permission to do less. Observations track reciprocal gaze and parent's comfort with silence.

What you'll need

Hold baby facing you, 8-12 inches from your face. Any stable hold — cradled, over your knees. Good light on your face helps.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

    See if their eyes find yours. Don't pull a face, don't make a sound. Just let them look.

    Watch for: sustained_mutual_eye_contact

  2. 2~60s

    Stay there. Stay with them. I'll hush.

    Watch for: extended_mutual_gaze_sustained

  3. 3

    If a smile comes — yours or their — let it happen. Don't perform. Just meet it.

    Watch for: dyad_exchanges_smile
