Story Painting
Child draws or paints a scene from a favourite story. The agent coaches the parent to observe creative interpretation, narrative understanding, and artistic expression as the child translates story to image.
Opens a guided voice session in TogetherTime.
What you'll need
Paper, crayons/paint/markers. A favourite story freshly in mind (read it first if needed). Child chooses what scene to draw.
How it works
- 1~20s
Ask your child which part of the story they wants to draw. Does they choose a specific scene? A character? A feeling? The choice tells us about narrative understanding and what matters most to your child in the story.
Watch for: Child selects a specific scene or element from a story, showing narrative comprehension.
- 2~40s
While your child draws, watch the creative process without directing. Does they use colours that match the mood? Does they narrate while drawing ('This is the wolf, and he's going here')? Is the drawing recognisable as the story scene?
Watch for: Child creates artwork that interprets a story scene with recognisable elements and creative expression.
- 3~25s
When your child finishes, ask: 'Tell me about your picture!' Listen to their narration. Does your child describe what's happening in the scene? Does they add feelings or dialogue? This tells us about both narrative ability and creative expression.
Watch for: Child narrates their artwork, describing story elements, actions, and possibly emotions.
