Rhythm Baby
Parent bounces and claps to music with baby, and the agent coaches the parent to observe baby's rhythmic responses — bouncing, swaying, clapping, or vocalising to the beat. This activity explores early aesthetic engagement through rhythmic movement and music.
Opens a guided voice session in TogetherTime.
What you'll need
Baby on parent's lap or standing with support. Music source available (phone, singing, clapping). Space to bounce and sway safely.
How it works
- 1~25s
Put on some music or start singing a song with a clear beat. Bounce your child gently on your knee in time with the music. After a few bounces, stop suddenly. you, watch — does your child bounce on their own? Move their body? Show any sign of wanting the rhythm to continue?
Watch for: Baby shows rhythmic body movement in response to music — bouncing, swaying, rocking.
- 2~25s
Now let's try clapping! Hold your child's hands and gently clap them together in time with the music. After a few claps, let go and see if your child tries to clap on their own. It doesn't have to be perfect — any hand-banging that looks intentional counts!
Watch for: Baby attempts to clap hands together in response to music or parent modelling.
- 3~30s
Last experiment — let's see if your child has a musical preference. Try two different types of music — something fast and upbeat, and something slow and gentle. Give each one about 15 seconds. you, which one gets a bigger response? More bouncing? More smiling? More vocalising?
Watch for: Baby shows preference for a particular type of music through differential engagement.
