What you'll need

A 3-5 minute clip from a movie or show. Can use a phone, tablet, or TV. Choose something with interesting visual/musical choices.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Great — watch the scene together now. When it's done, ask your child: 'What did you NOTICE about how that was made? Not what happened in the story — how did the filmmakers make you feel something?' Let them think for a moment, then tell me what they says.

  2. 2~45s

Now try this: watch the same scene but MUTE the sound. Ask your child: 'How does it feel different without the music and sound effects?' Then unmute and watch once more. Tell me what they notices about how much the sound changes the experience.

  3. 3~40s

Final question: ask your child to give this scene a rating out of 10 — not for the story, but for how WELL it was made. And they has to explain the rating. 'I give it a 7 because the acting was great but the CGI looked fake' is the kind of thing I'm looking for. What does they say?
