Letter Safari
Parent and child hunt for letters in the environment — on signs, books, packaging, clothing labels. The agent coaches the parent to observe the child's letter recognition, interest in print, and understanding that letters carry meaning.

What you'll need
Walk through the house or outside. Point out letters on packaging, signs, books, clothing. Focus on uppercase letters initially.
How it works
- 1~30s
Start with your child's name. Write it or find it somewhere, and point to the first letter. 'Look! This is the letter your child starts with!' Does your child recognise it? Can they find the same letter somewhere else in the room? Say 'Can you find another one like this?'
Watch for: Child recognises and can find a familiar letter in the environment.
- 2~30s
Now walk around together and see how many letters your child can spot on different things — a book cover, a cereal box, a T-shirt. For each one, say 'What letter is that?' or 'Can you find the letter B?' Does your child look at print? Does they understand that the marks on things are letters?
Watch for: Child shows awareness that print in the environment contains letters and meaning.
- 3~20s
For our bonus challenge, when your child finds a letter, try connecting it to its sound: 'That's the letter B — buh buh buh, like ball!' Does your child try to make the sound? Does they connect the letter to a word that starts with that sound?
Watch for: Child connects a letter to its sound or a word that starts with that sound.
