Fraction Feast — Cook With Numbers
Parent and child use cooking or baking to explore fractions in a hands-on context — halving recipes, doubling ingredients, working with thirds and quarters. The agent guides the parent to observe fraction concepts, proportional reasoning, and mental calculation with fractions as they emerge naturally through the cooking process. This activity reveals mathematical understanding that standardized tests miss — whether fractions are abstract symbols or intuitive, embodied knowledge.
Free to do together whenever you like.
What you'll need
Choose a recipe with fractional measurements. Pancakes, basic cookies, or muffins work well. Gather all ingredients, measuring cups (including 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 1 cup), and measuring spoons. Have the recipe written or printed where the child can read it. Clear a workspace where the child can measure and mix. The parent should let the child handle the measuring — the math lives in the hands.
